Romantic Killer

tags: anime, comedy, Netflix streaming, romance
12 episodes
⭐⭐⭐⭐
A "non-heroine type" high school girl is thrown into a situation like something straight out of a dating simulation game! This slapstick adolescent romantic comedy follows the romance-averse Anzu.

Anzu Hoshino is a "non-heroine type" high school girl who pays no attention to fashion or romance and spends every day playing video games. After the wizard Riri suddenly appears and confiscates Anzu's three favorite things — video games, chocolate, and cats — she gets pursued by hot guys!
Super funny anime series. It's a departure from the usual anime love story. Anzu is not interested in boys, not even ikemen. She just wants to play video games, eat tons of chocolate, and play with her cat Momohiki. A wizard takes over her life and is forcing her to look at handsome boys and start dating. The episodes kept me in stitches. Brilliant script. Silly but entertaining as always.

Highly recommended.

Kotaro Lives Alone

tags: anime series based on manga, Japanese, Netflix streaming
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

10 episodes, 27 minutes
The story is about a lonely four-year-old boy Satо Kotaro who moves in Shimizu Apartments to live by himself hoping to be reunited with his parents. He makes friends with his neighbors including a poor manga artist, a young girl working in a club as a hostess, and a kindhearted thug (yakuza?).
The idea of a four year old boy living alone is absurd but anything is possible in anime. Each episode is funny but also sad and heartbreaking and there is a lesson learned by the adults as well as the children at Kotaro's Kindergarten school.

Kotaro made cute bento with onigiri shaped like his favorite anime character Tonosaman

A 10-episode live action series based on the same manga, Kotaro wa Hitorigurashi (Kotaro Lives Alone), was broadcast in 2021 but I like this current 2022 anime more.

Trese

Anime streaming on Netflix
Based on Filipino mythology and folklore
6 less than 30 minute episodes
In original English or Filipino dubbed

Trese which means the number 13, Tagalog spelling of trece in Spanish is the surname of the female monster slayer. The anime is based on a popular comics series in the Philippines and Asia which I have never heard of. Some of the Aswang (generic term for various evil spirits but mostly vampires and shape shifters) in the series are unfamiliar and the nuno doesn't look like the Nuno Sa Punso (old man on the mound) that I remember as a child. The Filipino Nuno is similar to the Swedish Tomte. Nuno and Tomte have the same historical background and look almost the same in appearance and clothing. They both sit on a mound and can be good or vindictive. They do not live in the sewer as shown in the anime.

But I digress. I watched a few episodes in original English but there are some lines in Tagalog that are not subtitled. It will be hard for non Tagalog speakers to understand those terms such as Lakan which means a Filipino nobleman, example - a princess or prince.

Streaming on "Netro-fricks" (Netflix) - 5 16-minute episodes Japanese anime comedy.

A yakuza quit his job, got married, and became an earnest househusband. Very funny and great animation.

There's also a live action series based on the anime, search Gokushufudo if you can't find the English title.

Sturgill Simpson Presents Sound & Fury

from Netflix official site
In this anime visual album, a mysterious driver heads deep into a postapocalyptic hellscape toward a ferocious showdown with two monstrous opponents.
Although I've been listening to country music the past 3 years, I've never heard of Sturgill Simpson until this animation appeared on my Netflix streaming suggestion list in September of this year. Instant like because of the music genre bending and I love his Waylon Jennings voice, anime, electtronica, and bloody revenge stories. I've been watching and sometimes just listening and the video will probably stay on my Netflix list for forever. I turn the subtitles on to read the lyrics while playing.

Track list
 1.  Ronin
 2.  Remember to Breathe
 3.  Sing Along
 4.  A Good Look
 5.  Make Art Not Friends
 6.  Best Clockmaker on Mars
 7.  All Said and Done
 8.  Last Man Standing
 9.  Mercury in Retrograde
10. Fastest Horse in Town

My favorites are 5 and 9. Great tune and lyrics.

Mercury in Retrograde
I got a haircut in Norway
When all the weight started pulling me down
Smelling like a waterlogged wet dog
Ain't no way to travel
But as soon as I chopped it all off
It just grew back, thick and brown
I keep tugging on the thread
Hoping it all might come unraveled
I keep trying to throw it all away
But it comes right back around
They come backstage and on my bus
Pretending to be my friend
Shaking hands behind grandstands
All wearing the same old grin
Oh, but none of them bother knocking
Oh, they all just come on in
Asking me what all my songs mean
Wonderin' if they're all about them

Mercury must be in retrograde again
But at least it's not just hangin' around pretendin' to be my friend
Oh, the road to Hell is paved with cruel intention
If it's not nuclear war, it's gonna be a divine intervention

Living the dream makes a man wanna scream
Light a match and burn it all down
Head back home to the mountain
Far away from the pull
Of all the journalists and sycophants wielding their brands
And all the traveling trophies and award show stands
And all the haters wishing they was in my band
Sorry boys, the bus is plumb full

Mercury must be in retrograde again
But at least it's not just hangin' around pretendin' to be my friend
Oh, the road to Hell is paved with cruel intention
If it's not nuclear war, it's gonna be a divine intervention

And there's nothing for me outside this hotel room
But another letdown, lonely day
Tour is almost over, and I'll be home soon
And it's all been done two or three times anyway

Mercury must be in retrograde again
But at least it's not just hangin' around pretendin' to be my friend
Oh, the road to Hell is paved with cruel intention
If it's not nuclear war, it's gonna be a divine intervention
