Beauty And Mr. Romantic

Plot Synopsis by AsianWiki Staff
Park Do-Ra (Im Soo-Hyang) is an A-list actress, but a case causes her to fall to the bottom. Go Pil-Seung (Ji Hyun-Woo) is a rookie drama series PD. He falls in love with Park Do-Ra and he tries to bring her back to the top.
My weekend might get busy again watching this new 50 episode Korean drama starting on March 23. The queen of Korean revenge dramas Im Soo-Hyang stars so I have to watch her in a romcom series. I hope there won't be any revenge and the writer doesn't drag the story or add the ever annoying amnesia.

Literal title is Beauty and the Devoted. Alternate title on drama websites is Beauty And The Pure Guy.

A Killer Paradox

tags: crime, Korean drama, Netflix
⭐⭐⭐⭐
8 episodes, 55 to 60 minutes

Choi Woo-sik and Son Suk-ku. How can I not binge watch the whole thing? The series has similarity to the characters in the book Crime And Punishment but the reason for the murders is closer to the 1999 movie The Boondock Saints. The writer IMHO plagiarized the main theme of the movie which is the moral dilemma in killing evil murderers and rapists. There are too many similarities I just cannot ignore. I still rate it 4 stars.

For those who haven't seen The Boondock Saints, the movie is about twin brothers in Boston who in self defense killed 2 Russian thugs terrorizing their local pub owner. They also killed in one go 8 of the Russian mobsters, including their leader, by sheer luck. They believed and decided they are good in getting rid of mafias, drug lords, pedos, sex merchants, or anyone who is a menace to society. The FBI agent played by Willem Dafoe was no match for the boys and eventually joined them. LOL. The Boondock Saints is one of my favorite movies.

Big Bet

tags: action, KDrama, murder mystery
Big Bet (formerly titled "Casino") is the story of a man who has become a legend of a casino in the Philippines without money or support, and starts the last bet on his life when he is caught in the middle of a murder.
Actor Choi Min-sik plays Cha Moo-sik, the legend of casino and Lee Dong-hwi plays his right-hand man Jung-pal. Son Suk-Ku plays Oh Seung-hoon, a local police officer in charge of crimes related to Koreans living in Philippines, while Filipino actor Nico Antonio plays his counterpart in the CIDG.
The original title was Casino but changed to Big Bet which is better IMHO. I've seen the first 3 episodes released today, December 21, for total of 8 episodes. Second part with 8 episodes will be aired after a 2 week break. I like the 3 episodes so far. Must watch because Choi Min Sik of Oldboy and my current fave Son Suk-Ku are the main actors. It's interesting that it was partly filmed in the Philippines with some Filipino actors.

My Liberation Notes's Mr. Gu

Move over Gong Yoo, Lee Min-Ho, Park Bo-Gum...there's a new heartthrob in KDramaland, Son Suk-Ku who plays the mysterious tight-lipped stranger in Netflix drama My Liberation Notes. Mr. Gu is working as a carpenter hired by the father of 3 adult siblings still living in their parents' house outside of Seoul.

My Liberation Notes synopsis from AsianWiki
My Liberation Notes" tells a story of three siblings and a stranger.
Yeom Chang-Hee is the middle child of the three siblings. He wants to escape from his family's home in Sanpo Village, but he doesn't have a dream and just spends his life meaninglessly. He is looked down upon by his family members.
Yeom Mi-Jeong is the youngest child of the three siblings. She would like to be liberated from her boring life, but she is introverted and timid. She is lonely and feels unfulfilled in her life.
Yeom Gi-Jeong is the oldest child of the three siblings. She has a hot temper. She wastes a lot of time commuting to her job in Seoul from Sanpo Village. Her life is filled with complaints and she wants to find love.
Mr. Gu is a mysterious man, who suddenly appears in Sanpo Village. He is always drunk. One day, Yeom Mi-Jeong approaches him.
Son Suk-Ku and his character Mr. Gu are currently the most popular and beloved by fans worldwide. The videos above are made by fans of Mr. Gu and Mi-Jeong from the series.

The first 6 episodes, Mr. Gu doesn't talk much nor socialize with his neighbors, and he drinks 2 bottles of soju every night. One day, the youngest daughter Mi-Jeong, makes an unusual proposition which he accepts by doing something unexpected - a fantastic long jump exactly like a gold medalist Olympian to retrieve a hat for Mi-Jeong. His old life is being revealed slowly which may or may not be bad. But the audience probably won't mind if he turns out to be a gangster.

Son Suk-Ku is not the most handsome Korean actor nor is he very tall, but on screen he has that oomph that viewers noticed him when he appeared briefly in Episode 6 of Jirisan.

He is also on Netflix Korean military drama series, D.P., as Lt. Im Ji-Seob

Korean Dramas 2022

2 new Korean dramas started streaming on Netflix. I hope they are both good up to the last episode

Twenty Five Twenty One
Saturday and Sunday

from AsianWiki
Twenty-Five, Twenty-One tells the love story between Na Hee-Do (Kim Tae-Ri) and Baek Yi-Jin (Nam Joo-Hyuk). Na Hee-Do is a member of her high school fencing team. Due to the South Korean financial crisis, the high school fencing team gets disbanded. Getting through all the difficulties, she becomes a member of the sabre fencing national team.
The South Korean financial crisis also causes Baek Yi-Jin’s father's business to go bankrupt. This leads to a life change for Baek Yi-Jin, from living the life of a wealthy person to a poor person. While studying, he works part-time jobs like delivering newspapers. Later, he becomes a sports reporter for a broadcasting network.
31 year old Kim Tae-ri, second from the left on first photo, plays an 18 year old High School student

Forecasting Love And Weather
Saturday and Sunday

from AsianWiki
A story depicting love and work lives of employees at the Korea Meteorological Administration. Jin Ha-Kyung and Lee Shi-Woo are two people employed there.

It is becoming a trend in Korean dramas always pairing older actresses with younger actors. I'm not liking it but I am a KDrama addict and also I love the lead cast of both dramas.

Twenty Five Twenty One female lead, Kim Tae-ri is 31 years old playing an 18 year old High School student set in 1998. She looks young and is believable as a teenager, IMHO. Nam Joo-hyuk is almost 27 and playing a 22 year old college student so the age gap is more acceptable. Forecasting Love and Weather female lead, Park Min-young is 35 and the male lead, Song Kang is almost 27, 8 years younger. I liked the first episode of both dramas. I'll ignore the age difference.

Jirisan

Jirisan
16 90+ minute episodes
Saturdays and Sundays starting on October 23, 2021
with Gianna Jun and Ju Ji-Hoon
tags: action, drama, fantasy, folklore, Korean, mystery, supernatural

Jirisan is a Korean action drama series about mountain rangers at Jiri Mountain National Park. Seo Yi-Gang (Gianna Jun) is the best ranger who knows virtually everything about the area at Jiri Mountain National Park including where to climb the mountain. Kang Hyun-Jo (Ju Ji-Hoon) is a rookie ranger who graduated from the military academy and was once an army captain. They become partners in rescuing hikers who get lost around Jiri Mountain National Park.
I've seen the first episode and I loved it already including the OST by Jin of BTS. This is high-octane action drama with superb cinematography, even the CGI, and top-notch cast. Clairvoyant newbie Kang Hyun-Jo isn't given time to change clothes nor brief orientation and dives right into action.

Racket Boys

Racket Boys - Korean comedy drama sports streaming on Netflix
16 episodes, 85 - 90 minutes, Monday and Tuesday

from AsianWiki
A story of a boys' badminton team at a middle school in Haenam as they compete in a junior athletic competition. The 16 year old boys and girls in Haenam grow as people during this time.
Yoon Hyeon-Jong was once the best badminton player and he now takes the coach job of a boys' badminton team at a middle school in Haenam. The badminton team is on the verge of being disbanded. The players on the team are Yoon Hae-Kang, Bang Yoon-Dam, Na Woo-Chan and Lee Yong-Tae. The players are not very good yet.
Meanwhile, Ra Yeong-Ja is the coach of the girls’ badminton team at a different middle school in Haenam. Her badminton team ranks #1 among their peers.

The drama comedy started airing May 31 and June 1, 2021 and I'm already hooked. The drama has lots of laughs, has quirky characters, and witty dialog. I'm not a sports fan and it's surprising that I enjoyed the competition at the end of the second episode.

The main story is about middle school boys training and competing in badminton tournaments to be able to continue the school's badminton program. Their coming together as a team is well told and the minor characters also have interesting stories to them. It's a heart warming series and it has a potential to become my 2021 favorite.

Episode 3 - the boys enjoy jjajangmyeon

South Korean Series Coming To Netflix Streaming

Hello, Me!
February 17, 2021
Wednesday and Thursday
comedy, drama, fantasy
Ban Ha-Ni (Choi Gang-Hee) is 37-years-old and a single woman. She holds a temporary position at work, which makes her nervous that she might get fired. She is generally servile and timid. Considering her current state, she does not want to be single. One day, 17-year-old Ban Ha-Ni (Lee Re) from the past comes to 37-year-old Ban Ha-Ni. 17-year-old Ban Ha-Ni is totally different from her older self. The younger Ban Ha-Ni is bright and optimistic.
This is going to be hilarious. The talented Eum Moon-Suk, who appeared in The Fiery Priest and Backstreet Rookie, is a great addition to the cast. First episode is already knee slapper funny.

February 20, 2021
Saturday and Sunday
dark comedy, drama, romance
At the age of 8, Park Joo-Hyeong went to Italy after he was adopted. He is now an adult and has the name of Vincenzo Casano (Song Joong-Ki). He is a lawyer, who works for the Mafia as a consigliere. Because of a war between mafia groups, he flees to South Korea. In South Korea, he gets involved with Lawyer Hong Cha-Young (Jeon Yeo-Bin). She is the type of attorney who will do anything to win a case. Vincenzo Casano falls in love with her. He also achieves social justice by his own way.

**********************************************************************

One of the writers of Vincenzo, Park Jae-Bum, wrote in 2019 one of the funniest Korean comedy action drama series, The Fiery Priest. I hope Vincenzo will be as funny as Kim Nam-gil, Honey, and the cast of The Fiery Priest.

Mr. Queen

tags: comedy, Kdrama, mystery, sageuk, time-slip

This new Korean drama sageuk (historical fiction) has 16 episodes that started December 12 and 13. The first 2 episodes are mostly comedy with a present day male chef who drowns and finds himself in the body of the designated queen during Joseon period. The male chef in a female's body creates hilarious scenes. Shin Hye Sun's performance of the male chef played by Choi Jin Hyuk is nothing but perfection IMHO.

Highly recommended for Korean sageuk drama and comedy fans.

The School Nurse Files

tags: action, comedy, fantasy, ghosts, mystery, Netflix streaming, Kdrama
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

from Netflix
Eun-young is an ordinary school nurse with an extraordinary secret: she sees strange and beautiful jelly creatures that no one else can see. She’s not particularly fond of this gift, but when the school comes under attack, it’s up to her and fellow teacher In-pyo to save the day. Question is, does she feel like saving the world today?

After watching this new Netflix 6-part series from South Korea, I felt as though I have just walked into Haruki Murakami/David Mitchell/Takashi Miike universe. It is fantastically weird full of weird people competing for the most weird one. Eun-Young, the school nurse has a gift of seeing jellyfish-like creatures which are visible to her only. She uses her plastic toys, a retractable sword and a gun to kill the jellies. She is a ghostbuster protecting the school kids from evil spirits roaming the school. When a swarm of bugs appeared, again only visible to the nurse, a female high school student appears out of nowhere. She was never born to human parents and has lived many lives as a male and for the first time is living as a female enrolled as a new student in the school. She is a bug eater which is beneficial to humans much like green lacewings and ladybugs eating harmful insects to protect plants. This character dies every 20 years and is reborn as a high school teen so she or he never ages. The series is absolutely entertaining.

I just wished the male lead is older. Nam Joo-Hyuk is 26 years old, 12 years younger than the female lead actress. I like both of them, just don't do a romance story line later if there is a second season. I wish McKenzie has more screen time because he's a very interesting character. Or maybe it's just me because the actor playing him, Yoo Teo, is good in all the shows I've seen him in specially as Ragaseu in Arthdal Chronicle and as Kwon Min-Seong in Chocolate, both streaming on Netflix. All 6 episodes are streaming on Netflix and now I can't wait for the second season. I have to re-watch.
